Kompania Piwowarska’s foil packaging is now fully environmentally friendly
In November, Kompania Piwowarska completed the project aimed at transitioning to shrink film made entirely from secondary materials for the multipacks of non-returnable cans and bottles of all its brands. As a result of this initiative, the beer producer will reduce CO₂ emissions by nearly 20% compared to the previously used material. The use of eco-friendly foil is another step towards the implementation of the"Better Future 2030" strategy, in which the company committed, among other things, to ensuring that all its packaging will be primarily made from recycled materials.
Kompania Piwowarska introduced the first shrink films made entirely from recycled materials (R100) for the Lech Premium brand. The aim of this initiative was to find a more environmentally friendly solution for packaging multipacks of cans and bottles. This effort was driven by the need to care for the natural environment by reducing CO₂ emissions. The new foil was labelled with the message "100% recycled foil”.
– We implemented the first recycled foils in March 2022. They were used for four-packs of cans and six-packs of bottles of Lech Premium. This was the first widespread application of this type of shrink wrap. Simultaneously, we worked on utilizing it for packaging other brands, and since the beginning of this year, we have gradually started the transition process. Currently, we can proudly announce that all our shrink film multipacks, in which we sell our beers, are made entirely from recycled materials. As a result, we will reduce CO₂ emissions by nearly 20% compared to the previously used foil – commented Ewa Seidel, Supplier Quality Assurance Manager.
The R100 shrink wrap is produced from plastic waste that was diligently sorted by recycling facilities after obtaining it from breweries, including those of the Asahi Europe & International Group, beverage and mineral water producers, glass packaging manufacturers, as well as retail chains and households. Exactly 100% of the material used to produce such foil comes from recycling, meaning that Kompania Piwowarska gives waste a second life by operating in a closed-, fully circular system. An integral part of this process is meeting high requirements in terms of product quality and safety, functionality, and customer marketing expectations.
The project is a proof of the company"s commitment to implementing its strategy, in which, among other commitments, the beer producer pledged to ensure that all packaging of its brands would be primarily made from recycled materials, and to reduce carbon dioxide emissions across its value chain by 30%.
The company continues to seek solutions and implements those that contribute to reducing CO₂ emissions and energy consumption. In late 2023, Kompania Piwowarska launched a modern energy recovery system based on a heat pump – more information here: Kompania Piwowarska reduces carbon dioxide emissions across its breweries (kp.pl) In the first quarter of 2024, the company intends to complete the installation of further heat pumps in the Poznań brewery.
