Climate change adaptation for municipalities in the region of Wielkopolska

Kompania Piwowarska and Fundacja Wody Warta "Hydroni" are launching a competition to fund the development of a Climate Change Adaptation Plan. Through the "Adaptation for Wielkopolska" project, three grants of up to 30,000 PLN each will be awarded to municipalities in the region. Applications can be submitted until April 18, 2025.

Climate change presents a major challenge for local governments in Poland. Many municipalities lack sufficient preparation to cope with extreme weather events, including prolonged hydrological droughts and flash floods. Municipal Climate Change Adaptation Plans could help address this issue. However, given the financial constraints many local governments face, developing such plans is often not a top priority.

Considering the above, Kompania Piwowarska has committed to supporting municipalities in their adaptation efforts and enhancing local water resources. In collaboration with Fundacja Wody Warta "Hydroni", the company has launched a competition to fund the development of local Climate Change Adaptation Plans.

The funding is mainly targeted at smaller communities, where adaptation measures should be implemented based on a well-defined plan. As a result, the funding can be used to create the above-mentioned Plans and other documents that support climate change adaptation. These documents can then serve as a foundation for applying for further financial support for their implementation from other sources.

Kompania Piwowarska is the largest company in its sector in Poland, with one of its three breweries located in Poznań. Water is a key ingredient in beer production, and the company is committed to using it as efficiently as possible. In 2024, it used only 2.84 litters of water per litre of beer, placing its breweries among the global leaders in water conservation. However, the company aims to go even further by supporting the communities in which it operates and enhancing local water resources. This is especially critical in the Wielkopolska region, which, according to Kompania Piwowarska’s analysis, faces a higher risk of drought compared to other regions in Poland.

Serving as an expert partner, the "Hydroni" Foundation is dedicated to shaping public policies at the local, regional and national levels to promote and implement actions that contribute to achieving the global Sustainable Development Goals. Its purpose is also to encourage positive social change for environmental protection and combating the water crisis. The partnership between Kompania Piwowarska, the sponsor of the competition, and the Foundation creates a synergistic effect, where a business can actively support the communities in which it operates, with the backing of hydrology and climatology experts.

All municipalities and towns from the Wielkopolska region are invited to participate in the "Adaptation for Wielkopolska" project. Applications can be submitted until April 18, 2025, via the form available on the www.adaptacjadlawielkopolski.pl website.
