Thinking about the future of the planet, people and business. Kompania Piwowarska moves sustainable development into the core of its business strategy and announces its commitments for 2030.
Brewed with the use of wind electricity, in a way allowing to achieve record-breaking water savings, and almost half of it sold in reusable packaging – already today, Kompania Piwowarska’s beer is produced with respect for natural resources and the environment. However, the leader of the beer industry in Poland goes one step further and opens a new chapter in its approach to responsible business, moving taking care of people and the planet into the core of its business strategy. The goals and ambitions of the company in that respect for the net years have been specified in the recently announced “Commitments 2030”.
As the leader of the brewing industry, Kompania Piwowarska has been engaged in social and ecological matters for years, and earned a place among the top companies in Poland focusing on sustainable development. Due to the nature and scale of its business operations, the beer producer puts special emphasis on two sustainability areas – People and Planet, within which it set out specific goals to reach by 2030. They include: carbon neutrality, water savings, circular packaging, sustainable sourcing, inclusion and wellbeing, and responsible choices. Over the next ten years, the company will also complete tasks in two other areas: Portfolio and Profit. The strategy takes a global perspective into account, expressed in the Asahi Group Environmental Vision 2050, and its implementation contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
– We have been serious about the impact of our business on the planet and people for years. Now the time has come for us, as breweries belonging to the European part of Asahi Group, to introduce a fundamental change – making our ambitions and plans regarding sustainable development an integral part of our business strategy called “Our Commitments 2030”. It is focused on two pillars – Planet and People. That way, we show that already today we think strategically about our future, the future of the communities we operate within and our planet – says Igor Tikhonov, President of Kompania Piwowarska.
Asahi Group, the owner of the leader of the brewing industry in Poland, has taken on a number of commitments for the whole business, which the European part of the group has defined through specific goals:
Planet – within this pillar, the company undertakes to:
• Reduce the carbon footprint across the entire supply chain by 30%, both in the breweries and in cooperation with business partners and suppliers. The ultimate goal is to reach carbon neutrality across the entire supply chain by 2050.
Kompania Piwowarska has already taken specific steps towards executing that goal. Thanks to the renewable power purchase agreement from 2019, already this year the company will reduce its CO2 emissions by 66% compared to 2019, due to the fact that its breweries will use 100% renewable electricity generated by wind farms. At the same time, starting from 2025, Kompania Piwowarska will also obtain heat energy from renewable sources.
• Save water. Kompania Piwowarska’s breweries are already best-in-class in terms of water consumption in production of beer. Currently, the company uses only 2.63 l of water per 1 l of beer, which is even below the goal specified for the European breweries belonging to Asahi Group, which is 2.75 l of water per 1 l of beer. The producer intends to keep looking for further solutions in terms of reducing average water consumption in production of its beers, using the best practices within that scope applied in other Asahi Group breweries.
• Use circular packaging – meaning reusable or fully recyclable packaging made mostly from recycled materials. Already now, all of the company’s packaging is recyclable, and nearly half of Kompania Piwowarska’s beer reaches consumers in reusable packaging: glass bottles and KEGs. At the same time, 46% of the company’s products are sold in aluminium cans, 50% of which already come from recycled materials.
In addition, within the Planet area, the beer producer plans to cooperate with suppliers who source their products sustainably, and ensure biodiversity, by protecting endangered species.
People – the goal of the company is to build organizational culture that is open, inclusive and embracing of difference:
• Equality and diversity. Kompania Piwowarska aims for an equal balance of executive women in leadership teams. The company has already achieved the second goal within that area – equal pay for man and women.
• Development of the non-alcoholic beer segment. In order to provide consumers with greater choice and adjust to their needs and current trends, the beer producer will continue to introduce innovations in the non-alcoholic beverage segment, aiming for a 20% share of these products in its entire portfolio by 2030.
• Promotion of responsible alcohol consumption. Another priority is providing consumers with relevant information allowing them to make responsible choices regarding consumption of alcohol. In order to reach that goal, Kompania Piwowarska has been executing a number of programmes, including Check Your BAL, FASOFF, Responsible Driver and others.
The guarantor of executing such ambitious plans is assigning leaders in every member country of the European part of Asahi Group. For that purpose, project teams on national and regional levels have been created to develop, execute and monitor progress. Starting from 2021, sustainable development issues will also be included in the individual goals of company leaders, so they become their personal responsibility. In that form, they will be first reported on the level of Kompania Piwowarska, then Europe and the whole Group.
