This year’s edition of the Good Beer competition saw submissions from 150 beers competing in 15 categories. In the end, 37 of them received awards. The “dark lager” category was dominated by Kozel Černý – a beer with Czech origins, coming from the village of Velké Popovice. Brewed with the use of a special mix of dark malts, the beverage has a unique ruby colour and delicately sweet taste.
The gold medal for Kozel Černý is a proof of excellent quality of dark lagers from Kompania Piwowarska – beers form the company’s portfolio have been consistently awarded in this category since 2013. In previous years, the highest distinctions went to different variants from the Książęce collection – Burgundowe Trzy Słody was awarded once, while Czerwony Lager and Ciemne Łagodne triumphed three times. In total, KP’s beers received 13 medals across five editions of the competition.
– This award is even more valuable for us since the jury is composed of professional and objective judges, who evaluate all competing beers thoroughly. Besides that, we are extremely happy that another beer brewed at KP was appreciated in the dark lager category. It proves that we are true experts in that field – says Jacek Kołacki, Technological Process Engineer at Lech Browary Wielkopolski. – And who says that 13 is an unlucky number? In our case it is lucky and golden.
The winners were announced during the Polish Brewing Congress that took place in Wroclaw on October 10-11. It was the fifth edition of the Good Beer competition, while between 2013 and 2015 it was still called Golden Beer Poland. It’s a professional competition intended for producers and distributors providing the market in Poland with commercial beer. The jury was composed of 16 judges (experts and tasters from smaller, regional and craft breweries as well as independent PSPD-certified judges) who were evaluating the look, taste, aroma, bitterness and general impressions.
