PRZESTRZEŃ – new project designed by Jakub Szczęsny’s studio

05.04.2019

PRZESTRZEŃ (SPACE) is a new concept delivered by Jakub Szczęsny’s studio, SZCZ, the goal of which is to fill the shortage of places dedicated to local communities in big cities. The project was developed within the framework of cooperation with the LECHSTARTER programme that has been implementing positive changes across Polish cities already for four years.

Jakub Szczęsny is one of Poland’s most acclaimed architects. He specializes in small spaces, however his portfolio encompasses both little and large-scale projects – from objects, through buildings, to their surroundings. His Keret House is considered one of the most original artistic and building projects executed over the last years and was included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Preparing his contribution to the LECHSTARTER programme, the artist used his experience in working with non-governmental organizations and created a universal project that meets the needs of local communities.

The goal of the LECHSTARTER programme, which initiated the PRZESTRZEŃ project, is to introduce positive changes to urban spaces and activate local communities. After changing the programme mechanics, this year’s fourth edition entrusted the task of designing a space to a well-known Polish architect. Engaging Jakub Szczęsny resulted in an original project of a modular construction that can be easily fitted in different spatial environments.

THE SZCZ studio focused its efforts on cities struggling with a shortage of spaces dedicated to people. PRZESTRZEŃ is supposed to solve these issues. It will be a place to relax and escape the usual hustle and bustle, and at the same time an object that will inspire local residents to take initiative, create cultural events and exchange experiences. Surrounded by greenery, the construction will be a perfect place to organize an outdoor cinema, exhibitions or regular meetings with friends.

The steel construction makes the whole project seem light, while the geometric canopy not only makes it stand out, but also protects from the sun and rain. Stainless and rainproof components allow the visitors to use this space regardless of weather conditions, while the whole construction is easy to maintain.

The lucky cities in which the project will be executed will be selected over the course of the LECHSTARTER programme, which kicks off soon.
