Since 2015, events sponsored by Kompania Piwowarska include the Check Your BAL zone. The name speaks for itself: above all, event participants test their sobriety with the use of a professional breathalyser – the same kind as the one used by the Police. Last season, the participants of 10 outdoor events took advantage of that opportunity over 75 thousand times, which is over 50% more than last year.
Visiting the Check Your BAL zone gives you a chance to learn some interesting facts about how alcohol affects the human body, and even experience some unusual things. Visitors can find out how alcohol distorts our perception and impairs the ability to react quickly – all that without the need to drink even a drop of alcohol. This trick is possible thanks to special alco-goggles.
Equipped with the goggles, the guests of the Check Your BAL zone play with blocks, take simulator rides and complete a slalom course to a closed door, which they then try to open. This summer, the above-mentioned activities gathered over 15 thousand people, which is 25% better compared to last year’s result. The tasks were prepared to make people realize that irresponsible consumption of alcohol – in excess – can complicate even the simplest activities and no one should drive under the influence, no matter how little they had to drink. These alco-goggles are just perfect to educate through experience instead of theoretical lectures.
Wherever the interest in sobriety check-ups is the greatest, e.g. at the Woodstock Festival, which gathers several thousand people every year, KP tends to cooperate with some partners. One of them is a producer of breathalysers – Promiler. During the Woodstock Festival, the breathalyser tests are conducted in cooperation with the Police.
– As proven by the last three years of the Check Your BAL initiative, breathalyser tests are very useful, especially when it comes to a few day long events where the participants arrive with their own cars. Sometimes, people are queuing up at our checkpoints, as they want to drive back home safely and we are helping them do so – says Małgorzata Walędzińska-Półtorak, Alcohol Policy Manager at Kompania Piwowarska.
The Check Your BAL zone visits various events with different target groups, including music events, typical crowded beer fests, aviation picnics and disco polo festivals. It always there, where KP sees a chance to communicate the “I don’t drive under the influence” message to masses; where thousands of drivers arrive with their cars and should be able to get back home safely. The 2017 season was kicked off at Kortowiada (17-21.05) – a great student celebration in Olsztyn – and ended during the Safety Day in Tychy (09.09). So far, Check Your BAL has visited 28 events in different parts of Poland across three editions.
It’s also worth mentioning that Kompania Piwowarska has been implementing the concept of responsible alcohol consumption not only within its mobile zone, but also through hired salespeople. Every event is preceded with training within the scope of responsible sales of alcohol intended for people serving draught beer – this year, the number of people who have completed the training amounted to 653.
